About me-

The Surf Coast Dog Trainer, Using Positive Reinforcement for Lasting Results

Hi, I’m Cameron Fennell, founder and head trainer at The Surf Coast Dog Trainer, based in Torquay and servicing the Surf Coast and Geelong. I’m a dog behaviour specialist who helps owners resolve issues such as reactivity, aggression, anxiety, and impulse control, using science-based, positive reinforcement training.

Before becoming a full-time dog trainer, I spent 15 years in secondary education, developing a strong foundation in clear communication, behaviour change, and evidence-based learning. That background shapes how I work with both dogs and their people—training plans are practical, structured, and easy to follow.

My journey into dog training deepened through working with my two rescue Kelpies, Henry and Reef. Like many high-drive working dogs, they came with challenges that required more than generic obedience training. Learning how to meet their behavioural and emotional needs sparked my decision to combine my teaching expertise with professional dog behaviour training.

While still working part-time in education, I completed the Karen Pryor Academy Professional Dog Trainer certification and became a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers Australia. Most recently, I completed the Master Course – Aggression in Dogs with Michael Shikashio, one of the world’s leading authorities in canine aggression. This advanced training allows me to confidently support dogs with complex behavioural issues, including fear-based and aggressive behaviour.

I work with all types of dogs, from puppies needing a strong foundation to reactive or aggressive dogs requiring specialised behaviour modification. I have a particular affinity for high-energy working breeds such as Kelpies, Border Collies, and Heelers, and I understand the challenges that come with dogs who are intelligent, driven, and easily frustrated.

My approach is individualised and practical. Every training plan is tailored to the dog in front of me and the realities of your household. Whether you’re dealing with barking, reactivity, aggression, anxiety, or simply want your dog to become a calm, reliable companion, I’ll guide you step by step.

At The Surf Coast Dog Trainer, I use positive reinforcement and science-based behaviour strategies to create lasting change—not just in your dog’s behaviour, but in the relationship you share.
